The History of Porterfield Baptist Church

1933 – Present

The Porterfield Baptist Church was founded on Oct 15th 1933 by the American Sunday School Union. The church was organized and, at that time, carried the name Center Belpre Baptist Church. In 1934 the church was admitted to the Marietta Association.

For several years services were conducted in various locations, including homes. Through faith, prayer and hard work, ground was broken for the building of a basement. This was a slow process, as this project was done by volunteers and farmers using their own equipment. The first service was conducted in the basement in August 1954.

Plans were made to build a sanctuary on the basement in June, 1957. On August 3, 1958, a service was held dedicating the Porterfield Baptist Church. On April 9, 1961 ground was broken for the building of a parsonage.

In 1962 a four lane highway came through Porterfield and the church sat in the path of that highway. Land was purchased, beside the parsonage, and the church was moved from Porterfield and placed on the foundation in Sept., 1962. The addition of an educational wing was dedicated in May, 1963.

It became evident that more worship space was needed, so plans for a new sanctuary began and the first service in that addition was Oct. 6, 1974.

A multi-purpose/youth building was dedicated on July 25, 1982.

In 1988 a major building project added an additional educational wing with classrooms, nurseries, a conference room and new staff offices to the upper level and additional classrooms and fellowship space to the lower level.

On March 17, 2005 a fire destroyed the entire upper office and educational wing and the lower classroom and fellowship area, and left considerable smoke and water damage to the remainder of the facility. Because the building had many additions, over the years, it had a lot of “blind” walls that made it difficult to get the fire under control. For the remainder of 2005 thru April of 2007 our worship services were held at the Warren Local High School and West Virginia University, Parkersburg. We did not have to cancel any Sunday Morning Worship Services.

Through faith, prayer and numerous hours of planning by the building commission,
it was determined that our entire campus would be cleared to build a new facility.
By God’s grace it took only a little over 2 years after the fire to plan, clear and rebuild.
On April 29, 2007 we had our first worship service in the new church building.

Our children and youth sections were expanded in 2012-13 do to the blessing of growth
in those areas only 5 years since the new facility was completed.
